Permission is not a sure thing. There can be many situations that will prevent getting permission, some of which are the inability to locate the rights holder, publisher will not give permission or there just be no response to the request. Not getting permission is the exception rather than the rule, but you should always check with us a few weeks before classes start to see if there are any holdups. This will give you time to make new plans.
